Sunday snippets

We re-strung the clothes line yesterday so of course it rained today and is forecast to do so all week. Ariane claims she is responsible but I think we made some contribution at least.

Today Adam and I dismantled Caitlin's old loft bed, finished cleaning up her old bedroom and turned it into our gym. This involved moving the treadmill, exercise bike and weights machine from the half of the rumpus room that is not our bedroom, out the back door and back into the new gym. We did this in the rain. We decided not to move the lounge from the upstairs lounge room, out the front door, up to the top of the driveway, down the driveway, through the impassable garage of hobby associated junk, out into the backyard and then back into the rumpus room. I maintain that this decision was due simply to not wanting it to get wet and had nothing to do with the daunting prospect of a) clearing a path through the garage and b) carrying the damn thing all that way. We will be moving it before the end of the week though. Somehow.

Adam is making sourdough again. Looking forward to breakfast tomorrow!

I have been putting together a wish list by using Pinterest, so far there's not much on it, but there is something there that I really, really Must Have. It's these:

Time for a ThinkGeek order perhaps...

Adam is awesome. He has done so much cleaning up around the house this weekend, way more than me - I keep having to stop and rest because the heat an humidity does me in awfully quickly. He's still at it now while I'm here blogging and he hasn't so much as hinted that I ought to be helping him. Which I should have been. Don't tell him, but I'm deeply appreciative and I owe big time.

Bye, bye November

It's been fun, I've written 12 times as many posts as I did last month making it through my third NaBloPoMo with relative ease and, I think, only minor irritation to my family.

We have 2 and a half weeks of school left for the kids, that's only 12 days of primary school to go for David. I got his high school orientation info pack today, so many pieces of paper, so many forms to fill in, fees to pay (I'm interested to see that these include a voluntary $100 per student donation to the P&C - wonder how many people pay that?), new systems to learn, it's all a bit overwhelming.

There's a nice vague handout about the Religious Education program at the school with references to "inter-denominational" "non-threatening" and "significance of religion" which as far as I can see equates religion with Christianity and completely disappears any other faith, or lack thereof. I'll be interested to see an outline of the lesson program (the handout offers one on request). It's a program that was introduced when I was at the school, I remember it as being monumentally tedious, and that was when I was heavily involved with one of the churches that developed and still financially supports the program. There's a notable lack of references to the optional nature of Special Religious Education and no indication of what kids who opt out would be doing during that time - I'm not surprised by this and I don't believe there are any regulations that require that information to be offered, but it's interesting.

I'm tired. My head is full of little, and not so little, things I have to do, or remember, or talk to people about, or go to, or shop for. I have speeches and reports to write for the P&C. Work is relatively busy. November was a fairly hectic month for us and I really just want to stop for a while, but December promises to be just as full-on. I'm so looking forward to the holidays, I plan on sleeping and reading and playing games and not being in a hurry to do anything.

I'm sure Adam will be disappointed

He does after all, have quite a thing for Lizzy Bennet. Oh well.

I am Elinor Dashwood!

All blogged up and nothing to say

I'm sitting in my lounge room surrounded by the remnants of a day-long sorting out of all my beading supplies. It's going to be very nice to be able to find what I need without having to rummage through a confetti of small plastic bags (instead I will be shuffling piles of plastic boxes) but having spent most of the day sitting in the one spot has left me with a sore back, swollen feet and nothing much to say. (Also, no jewellery made, but I'm trying not to think about that.)

The week ahead promises to be fairly full-on. I have heaps of work to do and to re-do - thank you database disaster - and not nearly enough in the office hours in which to do it all. I have a meeting with David's teacher tomorrow at 1:30pm which steals half my afternoon from me and is providing a nice little edge of anticipatory tension in the back of my mind (he hasn't said what it's about). Tuesday night is a P&C meeting at which there is much to discuss and some possibility of strong feelings about some issues. Caitlin has a dance rehearsal at Lindfield on Wednesday afternoon so I'll be taxiing back and forth between that and Tom's drama class all afternoon. Thursday is so far unencumbered apart from the usual stuff of work, getting Caitlin to dance class and feeding the family. Friday I plan on spending at Ariane's place frantically doing last minute preparations for the school Christmas markets on Sunday, because on Saturday I won't have a chance as Caitlin has dance performances, a matinee and in the evening. And somewhere in amongst all that I need to make at least 20 pairs of earrings and half a dozen necklaces.

I reckon that, if I'm going to keep up the NaBloPoMo-ing through all that, I'm going to need some help. Ask me questions, hit me with memes, whatever! Give me something to work with here...

Friday Fragments

Friday Fragments?

This Friday Fragments thing seemed like quite a good idea today seeing as I was rapidly running out of day and hadn't come up with anything of substance to post. Mrs4444 has been fragmenting on a weekly basis for quite some time, in fact this week is her 70th Friday Fragments post and here I am embarking on my very first. Here goes!

1. I spoke too soon on the matter of no dead fish. When I went to kiss Tom goodnight last night I discovered one of the rummy nose tetras had expired, apparently they are quite sensitive to poor water quality. So at 9pm I was doing chemical testing and an emergency water change.

2. We had a database crash at work today and all our updates for the last 2 days were lost. Fortunately there are back-ups of the data I used that can be retrieved from our secure server provider - at first I thought I would have no record at all of the long list of subscriptions I'd half processed during that time.

3. We have milk and bread delivered in the wee small hours on Monday and Thursday mornings. On Thursdays we also get orange juice and eggs which means the second loaf of bread doesn't fit in the cooler bag we leave out. Instead it gets left on top and the resident possum usually helps itself to a slice or two - very neatly mind you and the rest of the loaf is fine. This week the bread was untouched. I hope Poss is ok. (Yeah, I could leave a second bag out but that's be just mean.)

4. When I finished Canteen duty at the school this afternoon there were four absolutely adorable, fuzzy, roly poly five week old Border Collie puppies tumbling about on the lawn beside the school hall. One of the kids had her mum bring them in for news and she had decided to hang around at school rather than go home in the small amount of time left of the school day. I wanted to snorgle them, but contented myself with a few tummy rubs. Snorgles seemed a little risky as only one of the four had a home lined up to go to when ready to wean. I so don't need a puppy. I should have taken a photo, shouldn't I?

5. I need new summer shoes, the ones I have are beginning to disintegrate. I have no idea when I am going to manage to get to the shops to buy some.

6. I have in my wallet a whole bunch of cheques that I need to go to the bank and deposit. One of them is nearly two years old - it's from the government so hopefully they'll still honour it, but I won't hold my breath!

And I'm done.

Lists

Things I have done but probably shouldn't have:
  • Signed up for NaBloPoMo. What was I thinking? Seriously, my posts per month haven't broken into double figures since February.
  • Offered to donate a prize for NaBloPoMo. I clearly have no self control.
  • Committed to sharing a stall selling jewellery at the school Christmas markets on November 22nd - I have no stock! And no time to make any!
  • Stayed up till 2am last night - I was falling asleep on the lounge from about 10pm, so stupid.
Things I should have done but haven't:
  • Send in the booking form for tickets to Caitlin's dance concert on time - hopefully I can still get the number of seats we need even if they're crappy ones.
  • Sent people I met at re-enactment events the emails with info I promised them and now I can't even remember what I promised to whom.
  • Ordered new school uniforms for Caitlin, she's resorted to unpicking the hems on her dresses herself so they aren't quite so indecently short. Thing is, aside from the length, they still fit her perfectly well.
  • Wash the dog, like, for months. She's surprisingly unsmelly though.
Things I still have to do:
  • Update the talk I have to give about the P&C at kindergarten orientation on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
  • Ring my 98 year old Grandma to say thank you for the birthday gift she sent me, I did send a message via my mum but that's really not good enough.
  • Coach Tom so that when he sings solo at the school talent quest he doesn't completely butcher "I Will Survive" - I did try to persuade him to choose a different song...
  • Find my car keys. I had them when I came home on Friday.
What I'm going to do now:
  • Give my kids "hugs and kisses in bed" - they all ask for that every night, even the 12 year old boy.
  • Make a pot of tea.
  • Watch The West Wing on dvd.
  • Go to bed before midnight.

Things are improving - I'll be back properly soon!

Thanks for asking after me Alix :) I'm fine - much, much better than when I last posted - but still finding it difficult to focus long enough to write anything of substance. Fortunately everything kind of fell into place on Thursday last week. I got the animals out to the vets without a hitch and I caught up on the worst of my pile of stuff at work. School term ended giving me a reprieve from homework related kid-wrangling until almost the end of the month and I resigned myself to wearing the same outfit all weekend at Conference on the basis that it was certainly very authentic to have only one dress given that we're supposed to be re-enacting the dark ages :-)

I've been Twittering and Facebooking (those links go to my profiles on both) a little and blog reading plenty but getting back to posting and commenting is taking a little longer to come good.

Conference was good fun, we ended up being able to stay in hard accommodation, ie. a timber hut/tent-like structure, and therefore didn't have to put up the big tent which made the whole exercise a LOT easier. The kids all had a good time and I was in bed by 10:30pm each night. I've put some photos on my Flickr but haven't edited the titles or descriptions yet. I ended up going to work on Tuesday and Wednesday this week leaving Adam with the brood (he took leave for all of this week), hosted a PartyLite candle demo on Thursday night and on Friday we had a couple of David's friends over for a Dungeons and Dragons game to celebrate his 12th birthday.

I'm still staying up too late but that's ok because we're on holidays and I'm not getting up till half-way through the morning :P I've got a week and a bit to get my sleep patterns sorted into something rather more sustainable before school and work kicks in again, I figure if I get up 30 minutes earlier every morning I'll be all set *sets alarm for 10:30am for tomorrow*

Tomorrow I plan on making lots of jewellery, specifically earrings. I need to make 48 pairs for the Mothers Day craft stall at school and they need to be done by the end of the holidays. I also have 3 gifts to make and the kids want me to make them necklaces to wear with their dark ages outfits. Reckon all that should keep me busy most of the day!

Not blogging, not sleeping, not coping

It's 1:45 in the morning. I'm supposed to be taking the animals to be boarded for the weekend first thing tomorrow, have to leave the house at 7:30am. I've not made the clothes for myself that I wanted to get done for the reenactors' conference this weekend. I'm not being very nice to my kids. And I'm up to my eyeballs in stuff to do both at work and at home.

Stress = not going to bed. So fucking stupid.

*kicks self*

At least I'll sleep while we're camping, it's much harder to stay up too late when living in a tent.

I've hit the wall

For way too long I have been going to bed after 1:00 in the morning, dragging myself out of bed the next morning, being too tired to accomplish very much during the day and then sitting around in the evenings feeling pissed off with myself because I've wasted so much of the day yet again and being too wound up to be able to go to bed even though I'm barely keeping my eyes open at 9:30pm. At around 11:00pm I get my second wind and the next thing I know it's 1:00am again and I'm stuck on this treadmill of stupidity for another day.

I feel like crap, the kids cop a grumpy mum, the house is barely under control and the days pass by in a blur of exhaustion. And it's all self-inflicted.

Tonight I have a sore throat and the beginnings of a nasty behind the eyes type headache, I should do a couple of hours work for one of my jobs but if I start doing that now then tomorrow is going to be horrible.

I'm going to bed.

It could have been a really bad day

But in the end it turned out better than average.

I took the kids to the pool again this morning, we all swam laps this time, Dave did 2, Tom did 4 and Caitlin did 6. She announced to me with great glee that she'd swum 300m. There may have been flippers involved but it's a significant effort nonetheless. I caved in to pleas for ice-cream when we were leaving so we all headed back to the car with fast melting treats. I had a Heaven Caramel Truffle which sadly wasn't nearly as nice as it sounds, I'll stick with something chocolate next time.

On the way home the car started doing weird stuff, we were slowing way down going up the hills, the transmission wasn't shifting down through the gears quick enough, then suddenly it would drop a gear and the revs were going through the roof. It was all very disconcerting and stuff, especially as I was in my swimming costume and board shorts. I knew I was low on petrol but not so low that I was worried about it - I've driven for 30 minutes plus with the gauge reading as it was many, many times. We made it to our street and just as I turned the corner and pulled into our cul-de-sac the engine died. Oh my god, I could have been stuck half-way to Pymble with a broken down car dressed in my swimmers in 35 degrees C! Close call.

After I'd got the kids inside I went back to check that the car was really dead before I rang the NRMA...and it started just fine, I was able to drive up to the house and park properly. Weird. I washed the dog (she was not amused) and then had a shower so I'd be presentable when the NRMA came, there was no way I was driving anywhere till someone had looked at the car.

The guy who came (and who incidentally was lovely, very impressed I was) gave it the once over but couldn't see any obvious problem. He suggested that the fuel gauge might be less accurate than it once was and offered to follow me to the servo to get petrol. No problems getting there, the car behaved quite normally, but when I filled up, instead of the usual 50-55L that fits in when the gauge is reading almost empty, it took 59.somethingL. It's a 70L tank. Seems I'd nearly run out of petrol and on the steep hills what was left in the tank wasn't getting into the fuel line properly.

The kids and I spent the rest of the day hiding from the heat. We played Disney Trivial Pursuit and much to Caitlin's disgust David and I won. Then we watched DVDs till Adam came home with his mum for dinner.

After dinner I buggered off leaving Adam with the kids and went to see Quantum of Solace with Jen which we both enjoyed immensely.

12 things for 2009

New Year's resolutions never seem to amount to anything much do they? I don't think I've ever made any that lasted past the first few days until last year and even then they weren't New Year's resolutions so much as February planning. I was quite pleased with how my goal setting for 2008 worked out, so I thought I'd do something similar for this year.

One thing I've learned from looking at which things got done and which things didn't is that there's not much point in setting my heart on achieving something that would require a major shift in behaviour for me or the family as a whole. Small changes and building on existing interests and activities is the way to go.

So what would I like to be able to tick off as done in 2009?

1. Take the kids to see live theatre - I'll be getting tickets to the Berowra Musical Society Les Miz production (which Caitlin did not get a part in - she was quite upset but hasn't sworn off auditioning in the future so I'm calling it a worthwhile experience) and I've booked tickets for The Nargun and the Stars so this one is well under way already.

2. Have a night out for just me and Adam once a month - movie, theatre, dinner without Tom demanding to leave as soon as he's finished eating, a moonlight walk on a beach, time to talk without interruptions or the distractions of tv and computers.

3. Learn something about photography and get the gear I need to be able to take good photos of food and jewellery etc indoors so I'm not reliant on the vagaries of natural light.

4. Remember to get my gorram B12 shots done on time - I had one just before Christmas so the plan is to get one in every month that's a multiple of 3, that shouldn't be so hard to remember should it?

5. Play a game, chess or whatever else he prefers, with David once a week - if we play chess he'll probably win every single time, after all he's been going to chess club for 6 months while I haven't played in years.

6. Do a craft activity with Caitlin once a week - we can play with polymer clay, make jewellery, draw, paint, make gifts for people, do needle crafts. She has a long-stitch project waiting to be finished at the moment.

7. Foster Tom's love of nature and interest in science by doing a simple experiment with him each week - I've got a book somewhere full of science experiments to do with kids using household stuff. He was absolutely thrilled with the electricity experiments kit he got for Christmas.

8. Walk the dog in the mornings instead of at 9:30 at night - I'm hoping this will help with getting me into a better routine for the mornings and also with having healthier sleep patterns.

9. Do enough tablet weaving to trim my Huscarls cloak and dress - more would be good but let's not get too ambitious!

10. Grow some herbs in my hanging pots on the front deck - I've tried this before and killed many, many plants in the process but it really should be possible, I just want mint, basil, parsley and chives.

11. Make sure we do one fun active thing together as a family each weekend - ice-skating, bowling, swimming, bushwalking, a visit to a park, flying kites, bike riding, walking around a museum or art gallery, anything that's not about watching something on a screen or centered around food!

12. Get the extension built (assuming we can get it approved) - this one kind of freaks me out, the huge disruption of either living with renovations or having to move out while they're done, the resulting change in our financial situation, the stress of it all. I do think this is the right time to do it though, if at all possible I want it done before David starts high school in 2010.

2008 in review

At the beginning of the year I posted a list of things I wanted to do during the year. I kind of lost interest in keeping some of the more mundane things on the list updated but looking back I'd say I've managed to do almost half of what I planned.
1. Bushwalking.
2. Swimming 50m laps.
3. Bike riding at Western Plains Zoo.
4. Cooking new meals.
5. House extension planning.
6. Bowling.
7. Selling jewellery.
8. Join the archery club.
9. Go see a play - not Shakespeare.
10. Camping with the Huscarls.
11. Learn bead making.
12. Write book reviews.
1, 2 3 & 6. I've done bugger all bushwalking, swimming or bike riding and haven't been bowling very often at all (which is a shame because I really love bowling).

4. I've cooked lots of new meals, probably more often than once a month, and some of them have even been recipes of my own devising.

5. The house extension planning hasn't made much progress at all but I do have a couple of recommendations for builders so that's something at least - and we did put the ducted air-con in with allowance for the extension if/when it's built.

7. Jewellery sales have been slow but gratifying, I need to get more of my stuff posted online to sell.

8. We joined the archery club but have yet to be offered a spot in a beginner's course, that should happen some time in the new year.

9. Haven't seen any live theatre at all this year, but I asked Mum for tickets to Belvoir Street Theatre productions for my birthday and Christmas presents so we'll be going to a few different shows in the year to come.

10. This one we did with a vengeance! Fun times. And some not so fun. We're already talking about which events we'll attend next year, I'm looking forward to it.

11. I loved learning how to make glass beads, so much fun! I have a big bundle of glass rods waiting to be turned into pretty beads, hopefully I'll get a chance to do some while the kids are on holidays.

12. I have no idea why I ever thought I would write reviews of anything I read, let alone everything, I didn't even manage to keep my no frills list of books read up to date.

As for the things I didn't plan on:

We inherited a dog.

And....

I was offered a job, but it turned out to be only 2 weeks work. Then I was offered another job - at my favourite bookshop. Then the first job wanted me back. And suddenly I went from not having been in paid work for 11 years to working 4 days a week. Still haven't quite adjusted to that (and probably won't for a couple of months yet because I'm lucky enough that when the kids are on holidays I don't have to go to work).

All in all it's been a pretty good year

Blog quiz warning, content free post ahead

It's scientifically proven, my cats are out to get me!

Is your cat plotting to kill you?

Well, this was much better for the ego than that other periodic table quiz.

Name That Element

Can't do rat dog breeds at all, except for chihuahua, I'd know those evil buggers anywhere.

Name That Dog Breed

I cheated on this one and made Adam help me, I'm notoriously useless when it comes to movie trivia.

Name That Movie Villain

With 11 seconds to spare! (shhh, don't tell them about Pluto)

I named 9 planets in 30 seconds Can you name all the planets in our solar system? (in 30 seconds)

I used to be able to do all of them thanks to a bit over a years worth of schooling in the US, but it always took longer than 10 minutes.

I named 38 US states in 10 minutes How many US states can you name in 10 minutes?

And on that note, I think I'll go to bed.

Things I'd like to know.

Why do my forearms and fingers ache today? Did I manage to sleep on both arms all night or something?

Why are embedded YouTube videos in blogs, including my own, not showing up for me today? They worked just fine yesterday.*

Why did it take me at least 2 hot and grumpy hours this afternoon to figure out that the reason the brand new ducted air-conditioning wasn't cooling the house was that if you leave the door to downstairs wide open then it'll do a sterling job of cooling the rooms you aren't inhabiting but bugger all for the part of the house you're in?

Why does my son think that if he half-hears what someone is saying in the next room he can interrupt and demand to have the conversation repeated for his benefit?

Why do some people find it necessary to sneer at the interests of others as though only their own preferences and interests are valid?

And finally, what are we having for dinner? (Don't say toasted sandwiches - we're almost out of bread!)

My day has been a little on the frustrating side. Did you guess?

*Never mind, I did the turn everything off and start again thing and they came back.

I haven't had dinner yet

I so need to be more organised.

If only I'd started working on my P&C stuff 2 days earlier.

Then I wouldn't have discovered, at 10pm last night, there was a document that needed revising which I had been previously unaware of and I would have started writing my speech then instead of at 12:30am.

And I wouldn't have been up till 2:30am failing to finish writing the speech I had to give at the Kindy orientation meeting for parents tonight.

Which would have meant I could get dinner cooked early in the afternoon instead of spending the time trying to make my sleep deprived brain come up with something informative and welcoming to inflict on the parents tonight and for someone else to read out on my behalf at the session tomorrow morning.

Which would have let me eat some real food before going out at 6:40pm instead of heading off with only a banana in my tummy (not that bananas aren't real...). I wonder if I sounded completely spacey with the tired and hungry? There were friendly smiles and shaking of hands after the meeting so I must have done something right.

Of course, when I got home at 9:00pm instead of the expected 8:30pm I had to make a phone call. Then Bren and Di arrived to go for a walk (we took Clara and Adam with us tonight - the toe is muuuch better). Post-walk I sat on the lounge and said to Adam "I haven't had dinner yet".

Apparently my dinner is in the microwave (Adam cooked, and he and the kids ate after I'd gone out), but in order to eat it I'd have to stand up, go to the kitchen and press a couple of buttons.

I'm not sure I have it in me to engage in such strenuous activity at this point.

Good thing it was a pretty big banana.

I've been redecorating

When I switched to the 3 column template there were a few things about it that I wasn't quite happy with but I had no idea how to go about changing them. Today I decided to see if I could find a new template that would do what I wanted it to. I googled and I clicked my way through to endless hideously designed blogs offering free templates that were either way too busy for my taste or just didn't work. So frustrating.

Then I found myself here reading a tutorial on how to create a 3 column template by customising a 2 column one. OMG, I get it! HTML begins to make sense! I did a lot of playing around testing things out on my test blog and then once I had it behaving I took the plunge and brought the new template over here.

Do you like it? I'm a bit concerned that the layout is too wide, though it should be ok on newer monitors, is anyone having to scroll sideways to see it all? Other than that, I think I'll try to get the header image a bit shorter, I'll probably play with the fonts and colours a bit and I'm still trying to get the flickr badge centered.

We won't talk about how many hours of my day it swallowed up.

To do list

There's a whole bunch of stuff cluttering up my brain. Things that need doing, people I need to speak to, places I need to be, forms to fill out, plans to make, invitations to send, lists to write, all of it whirling around popping in and out of my conscious mind at random. I'm feeling paralyzed by the confusion unable to focus on anything and consequently stressing out even more over the most trivial things.

The answer is simple of course. I need to write a list. But hang on, there's all sorts of different types of things in my head, one list won't do the trick, it'll be too unwieldy, too overwhelming.

So it'll have to be a bunch of different lists. Let's see.

  • One for getting the house under control, de-cluttering and cleaning, that sort of thing (there's one thing I don't have to put on that list, I bought a new toilet seat and installed it on the weekend - Yay! No more broken loo seat!).
  • One for people I need to talk to about P&C stuff.
  • Fill in my calendar properly, that takes care of the places I need to be part.
  • Go through the in-tray and find all the mail that hasn't been dealt with.
  • One for the Christmas Party invites, and then send out the invites.
  • One for birthday present shopping (why must half my extended family have birthdays in Oct-Dec?)
  • One for Christmas shopping (if I don't start now I'm so doomed, especially now I'm working).
  • One for Christmas cards (then ignore it as I do every year, who am I kidding?)
  • One for the P&C reports and presentations I have to write for various end of year events.
