Friday Fragments and Linkfest No. 13

I won't be around to comment on everyone else's Friday Fragments till early next week, we're off camping at the beach for the weekend - wish us good weather and kid-friendly surf!

Monday morning's car trip to school conversation went like this - Tom: Mum, how old do you have to be to mumble mumble mumble? Me: I can't understand what you're asking. Tom: *repeats* Me: It's like you're speaking a foreign language! Tom: How old do you have to be to have sex? Me: *enlightenment dawns, he was spelling S-E-X and I just wasn't parsing it because I wasn't expecting it*

I do love these philosophical challenges pre-caffeine and with only 2 minutes to adequately answer the question. I think I said something about the age of consent in NSW and the fact that even if you're "old enough" it's not whether you're allowed to that matters, it's whether both you and the person you're with really want to and if you both feel ready for the sort of commitment that being that intimate entails - only with smaller words.

We watched The Fifth Element with the kids on Wednesday night, they hadn't seen it before because David has always vociferously protested that he Does. Not. Want. and we've always given in and watched something else instead. It was the same with Star Wars way back when, we practically had to hold him in a headlock on the couch to make him watch it. Apparently if it's something Dad and Mum like it couldn't possibly be good. But on Wednesday Adam and I told him we were watching whether he liked it or not and when he said he'd go sit in the study we were even meaner and told him he had to sit in the lounge room.

When we got to the bit where the Diva is singing and Leeloo starts kicking butt Tom got very excited and said "I love it when the girl is not the damsel in distress!"

Oh, and do believe David quite enjoyed the movie after all. I apologized for making him sit through it and he said "Yes, it was a bit silly."

Freaky!

I've been exploring the Coraline movie website, so much awesome! I particularly like the clip showing the miniature knitting (it's in the top drawer under the mirror in Coraline's bedroom). I'm extremely peeved that here in Australia we have to wait till MAY for the cinema release *grumbles*

I have to confess I haven't read the book yet, but I did read an excerpt from it in the Nebula Awards Showcase anthology for 2003, the year in which Coraline won the novella category.

Oh well, at least I've got plenty of time to grab myself a copy of the novella and the graphic novel before I go see the movie.

Adam has terrible taste in movies

I've been sitting here trying to read blogs while Adam watches 10,000 BC. My god it's awful. Actually I'm not sure why he's watching at all given that every so often I'm hearing him exclaim about the variously stupid things happening on screen. I suppose I should be grateful that at least it's a DVD so I'm not also being subjected to ad breaks.

He's just offered the criticism "they've got very good teeth..."

1. One movie that made you laugh
I watched Death at a Funeral last night and laughed so hard there were tears.

2. One movie that made you cry

I have a vivid memory of going to see Gandhi at Roseville Theatre when I was 12 years old and sobbing in horror during interval (back in the days when they still had an interval during a film - mind you, Roseville was old-fashioned, I doubt any other theatres were doing intervals) at what the British did to the Indian people.

3. One movie you loved when you were a child

Robin Hood - I was Robin Hood for many years :) Beats being a princess don't you think?

4. One movie you’ve seen more than once
Serenity, I've actually lost count of how many times I've seen this on the big screen.

5. One movie you loved, but were embarrassed to admit it
Hmm, I'm not much for caring what anyone else thinks about my preferences so I really can't think of anything to put here.

6. One movie you hated
Fucking Barbie movies. All of them. I loathe them with a fiery passion and Caitlin and Tom loved them when they were younger (still do a bit). All rather distressing really.

7. One movie that scared you
I don't recall ever being scared as such by a movie, I tend to find things distasteful rather than scary and therefore am not interested in watching. Alien and Aliens had a touch of the edge of the seat to them though.

8. One movie that bored you
We're watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom right now and OMG I'm bored.

9. One movie that made you happy
Shakespeare in Love - I do believe I've mentioned this before :)

10. One movie that made you miserable
I don't know about miserable as such, but Schindler's List was kind of depressing.

11. One movie you weren’t brave enough to see
Again with it's not a question of bravery, it's a question of taste and I won't watch something I'm not going to enjoy.

12. One movie character you’ve fallen in love with
Ummmm...nope, I got nothing. I'm not sure what that says about me, possibly just that I have a really bad memory.

13. The last movie you saw
Tonight was supposed to be an Indiana Jones marathon in preparation for watching the new one next week, we gave up after the first 2, might do the 3rd...might not. I'm trying to remember the last one I saw at the theatre (see, there's that bad memory again)...oh gawd, I think it was Alvin and the Chipmunks. Now that is depressing.

14. The next movie you hope to see
I want to see Iron Man but it looks like Indy will come first.
